The Arts Council maintains the Dewees art gallery space at Huyler House, featuring local and visiting artists. Exhibits last 4-12 weeks, and are usually accompanied by an art opening on a Friday or Saturday night. Diane Kliros is the chair of the Arts Council.
Huyler House was designed with respect for old lowcountry beach cottages, with wide plank reclaimed floors and a huge wraparound porch. Our gallery space was enhanced by some new furniture and paint colors, and the addition of hurricane proof windows in 2017 allows for greater light in the common room. The muted grey palette shows off the artists strengths without distracting from the art pieces. Art can be hung from suspended lines along a railing.
This is a rough sketch of the main gallery space:
The main room is anchored by the fireplace, with a mantel that is 7 feet, 7 inches long. It is more than 6 feet to the screen above, leaving room for a large painting or several smaller ones.
The mantel is flanked by two windows, with display space on either side measuring 46″ from window to corner. The dressers also provide display space for sculptural objects, as do the mantel and ottoman.
The right and left walls are the same, with wide doors leading to the porch space. Inside the doors, on the north side, the piano anchors the wall space:
One the south, a marble table provides both display space or a surface for reception activities. The hanging system and dimensions are the same.
There is a round table in the back of the room, with built in shelving beyond.
The sides of these walls are also available to showcase art. See the dimension on the left and right above, each with with 33.5″ of room.
On the south side of the building, there is a corridor that leads to the kitchen. Credenzas on wheels here lend themselves well to either display space or reception items.
In addition, there is recessed shelf space:
The two credenzas are each 6 feet 2 inches long, and 22 inches wide at the deepest point.
Along the dining room wall, there are several options on the walls around the bifold doors. The one closest to the greatroom has 2 feet of space,
and at the end of the hall there is this space:
Inside the dining room there are additional options:
The television can also be used for presentations: it is on a cart on wheels. Here is the information about connecting to the television:
Samsung UN46FH6030 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz 3D LED TV (2013 Model) on rolling stand. There is an hdmi cable and remote, but you might want to bring your own connection cables. There is also a dvd player there. There is an antenna which connects the tv to 19 over-the-air digital channels. There is no cable or satellite service. A power strip is connected to the TV. The power strip should give you all the power you need for a standard hookup. If you’re bringing several other pieces of equipment or you want to put the TV far from the wall, you may need to bring an extension cord.
