The eastern redbud trees, circus canadensis, on the island fade from deep magenta to more pink before they begin dropping blossoms in late March and April. The flowers bloom early, before leaves appear, and are one of the first trees to bloom in the spring. It’s a member of the pea family, which is clear in the fall when the “fruit” hangs from the branches. The leaves are simple and heart-shaped and often reddish, turning yellower in the fall. Trees can reach 20-30 feet tall. It is an approved plant for Dewees island, and you can find ornamental trees near Huyler House.
