We are excited to see the new Dewees Breeze at the dock, as she gets ready to be cleared by the Coast Guard for passengers. This smaller boat will allow us to save fuel on those runs when there are fewer than 14 passengers. Preliminary estimates show that it will accommodate 4 carts of luggage as well. (And the interior center island can hold hand luggage that you carry aboard.) The boat has a shorter profile in the water, which might come in handy docking on windy days. The Dewees Breeze has the lowest diesel emissions engine available and a fuel burn of just over 2 gallons round trip. This reaffirms Dewees Island’s commitment to the environment. There will be roll-down “windows” to enclose the back area from spray and cold air.
It will be docked alongside the Dewees Islander, and the crew will be able to switch boats to accommodate the number of passengers who show up on the IOP side. Since the ferry is already “on demand” from the island side, the crew will be able to predict the number of returning passengers, as well. So if you are leaving with 10 people and a week’s worth of luggage, you might want to mention that!
Our children got to check it out yesterday: they report that the seats are very comfortable.

On Saturday night, there will be a happy hour on the Dewees Island dock at 5:30 pm to toast the arrival of the Breeze.
Thanks Reggie Fairchild, Tripp Hanna, and Kate Fairchild for the photos!
