We’re still chuckling about this year’s Halloween Hayride, which was fun beyond our wildest dreams. Our original plan was to watch the Great Pumpkin on the 5:00 ferry ride home, but the deckhand went home sick, and Captain Matt had to drive the Parker until he could get a mate. Which meant only six passengers at a time, and no TV.

(We’ll try the Great Pumpkin next year!) We loaded up the people mover at the Landings building, with costumed vampires and dinosaurs, hippies and Dr. Seuss characters, Batman and libations, and set off for the houses along Dewees Inlet drive. There were eight actual children in the mix, including three Mitchell grandchildren.

We loved the surprises along the way: glowing eyeballs on the Moser’s front door, The Kennedy’s basket of adult trick-or-treat goodies and pumpkins on the walkway, the entire haunted drive up to the McIntyre’s spooky porch (eyeballs or rats in your drink!), the giggles in the people mover, the treat bags (complete with fire hats) prepared by the Dewees Island Public Safety department, Wesley’s surprise appearance, grim reapers jumping from the bushes, the Hilton’s glowing eyewear, and lovely buckets of treats prepared ahead of time by the Cottons. We finished the evening for hot dogs and salads at McAlhanys. A HUGE thanks to all who participated! One anonymous almost 16 year-old proclaimed it the best Halloween ever!

Sorry to miss the fun! Next year!
