During his interview with the Dewees Archives Committee, Henry Savage said that they used to catch 50″ red drum (traditionally known as spot-tail bass in Charleston) back in the 1970s. Since the largest one I’ve ever seen was 31 inches I was a little skeptical.
According to the SC DNR, the largest red drum ever caught was 59 inches and 98 pounds! It certainly seems like Henry’s recollection could be accurate. Wow. Just think of catching a 50″ red drum. What an amazing fight it would be.
I should never have doubted Henry.
