Skype is a great way to talk to your grandkids and friends around the world

A recent email thread amongst some folks on a Dewees Committee reveled that some people don’t know about Skype.

Skype is a MAJOR worldwide phenomena.  You should definitely consider using it.  More than 300 million people use it.  Skype has been owned by Ebay since 2005.  Americans tend to be less aware of it than international folks because our telephone system is pretty good.  If you talk to anyone overseas, you should be using Skype.  Judy, for example, uses it to talk to her sister in Botswana.  Usually, it sounds like she’s just around the corner.

You can use Skype with audio or with audio and video.  If you want to see your grandkids, Skype is a great way to go.  If you have a MacBook, a video camera and microphone are built into your laptop.  You have all the hardware you need.  If you own a PC, then you may need to buy a headset like what Gary’s wearing.  You may also want a PC video camera.  Both items can be had for less than $100.  Many PCs are starting to come with built in microphones and video cameras.  If you have a newer PC, you may have all the equipment you need.

Judy is doing some writing and editing for a company in France.  She has only ever talked to her client via Skype and email.  Pretty cool.
