Last spring, I was totally captivated watching a group of Northern Gannets dive from the beach. Yesterday, we went into Charleston Harbor to watch the Moth North Americans (a crazy sort of sailboat with hydrofoils that lift the boat completely out of the water; click here for photos.) A flash of white with dark wings lifting off the water clued me in to the presence of a Northern Gannet. Likely heading north, the Gannet was resting on the surface of the water and allowed us to get quite close to it. Eventually, it lifted off from the water, but we had a great chance to watch it up close!




Did you use the Leica to photo these birds? Your shots are very good.

Beautiful pictures of the gannet! I’ve recently seen gannets as far inland as the old Navy base. I took a look at your hydrofoil pics too. Very cool!
