Yonder Blue Films creates incredible aerial footage of the island

We were so excited to host Ben Rowland and Will Wheeler of Yonder Blue Films on the island last week. You can play this video right from here, and expand the screen by clicking the button on the right, or click here to see it larger.

Ben and Will came to the aerial photography business after careers in the TV industry editing an extreme sports show.  After sitting at computers for a few years, they secretly suspected that the camera guys were having more fun.  Add that to the extreme gadget/coolness factor of an eight arm multirotor copter, and they decided to launch their own company.  They officially opened their doors in May, after working really hard to learn to fly the copter.

We hired them to take marketing shots here, because we had seen some of their stuff and were really impressed.  That eight wing multirotor enabled them to fly at much lower altitudes than traditional aircraft, and get unusually specific footage.
We were really impressed with them.  To start with, these are really nice guys, and very professional and safety minded.  Ben flies the helicopter and Will manages the camera, which is suspended below on a gimbal system.  He watches what the camera records through a TV monitor, and uses a walkie talkie to direct Ben’s flying. What results is some remarkable aerial helicopter video. When our afternoon breezes kicked in, they grounded the copter and switched to plan B: steadicam filming from the ground. They did multiple takes of particular shots to get them from the different angles.

They arrived on the 3:00 ferry, and spent an hour or so checking out the island and then decided the light was perfect, so we rushed down to the beach with bikes… they caught this great still of shadows and sunset. Then they got some night shots, some sunrise shots, some more of people on the beach… we had a great time making this, even when the wind made it too rough for flight. A hearty thanks to all of our “actors” who were willing to be in front of the camera, and everyone who helped.

Ben posted this “highlight reel” to their facebook page.  We love the music he picked and the way he wove the shots together.  We haven’t seen the entire set of footage he took, but this is exciting! After the credits, you’ll see a shot Reggie took with his iphone of the copter flying. If your video keeps stuttering, simply pause it and let it load, then try again.
