Big Year Bird Contest Tied at 131!

Tricolor Heron
Tricolor Heron

For a few months now, I have been hanging on to the lead in our big year contest– primarily because the Sullivans haven’t been to the island lately. This week, they spent the week on the island and gathered an impressive 29 new species! It helps that it’s warbler season, and I’ll admit to being quite envious of the time they spent perched at great locations finding new birds. Bill and I are now tied at 131 species each, and Mary Kay is close behind at 128. Together, however, we are at 153 species so far for the year. (If you look at the total number of species entered/observed on the island since the 1990’s, it’s at 212!) Here are some of my new finds this week: a juvenile yellow-crowned night heron, and a pine, cape may, prairie, and palm warblers. You can still join us… we are excited to try to find as many species as we can (as a team) this year. And with a quarter of the year yet to go, who knows how many we’ll find. For a complete list of what we have so far this year, scroll to the bottom of this post.

The birding on Dewees is awesome! Congratulations to everyone. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Without this contest I would never be able to tell one warbler from another.

Love it! Great photos – particularly love watching the warblers come through this time of year. Had no clue the different types.

  3. Brucie Harry

    Mighty fine photos!
Have there been many sightings of swallow tail kites? I see it listed.

  4. Judy

Ouch! I missed those sightings. On the day of the spring bird count, Mary Kay and Lori, Cathy and Carl, and Connie all saw them. Alas, I did not!
