With music playing, flags waving, and horns tooting, the new Dewees Islander Ferry arrived in Charleston Harbor yesterday. After a brief refueling stop at the City Marina, the boat crossed the harbor and entered the Intracoastal Waterway behind Sullivan’s island. We were there at the end of the old Pitt Street Bridge in Mount Pleasant to cheer her on, and it was truly exciting to see her with those cheerful flags, headed to Dewees. We watched her pass under the Ben Sawyer Bridge and head to the marina. According to Captain Tripp, there were also people waving from the Ben Sawyer. As the ferry rounded the bend at Morgan Creek, the captain sounded the horn, and a great cheer went up from the restaurant and everyone else in the marina.
The boat was open for an hour or so after arrival for residents to get a quick tour of her, in advance of this Sunday’s Christening ceremony. To ride the inaugural run on the ferry, you need a reservation! We will have a service at 3:00 Sunday to dedicate the boat, with a reading prepared by Jack Saueracker, and we have the requisite beverages prepared to toast her in style. Call Ginny Moser to make a reservation.

I can’t wait to ride this ferry! This will be a truly luxurious ride.
