One of the best things about Dewees Island is the way the community pulls together for common goals. Volunteers are needed this week (9:00 am tomorrow) to set up sand fencing. These are the fences we built in March, after being frustrated with the rusting shreds of old sand fencing on the beach. Our new fences are totally biodegradable; made of hemp twine and untreated pine.

As reported in a March post, we have permission from DHEC and OCRM to set up sand fences on our beaches in order to trap sand when the beach is in an accretion cycle. Despite the ebbs and flows of sand each day, we are in an accretion cycle on the beach near Osprey Walk. The three steps at the end of the walkway are completely buried in the sand, whereas last summer they were all above ground.
