The island has had some great birding lately, particularly at Huyler House Pond, where we have seen a wide variety of ducks and other waterfowl. In addition to our regular Hooded Mergansers and Pied-billed Grebes, we have seen Redhead ducks, Ruddy ducks, Scaup, and a large flock of American Coots. I have also seen (before the snow) a Snow Goose and a pair of Tundra Swans.
On Sunday, we will have some of our partners from the local chapter of the Audubon Society helping us conduct our annual Christmas Bird Count. They will actually arrive Saturday so we can get a very early start on Sunday. (looking for owls) I always see at least one new bird, and learn several new calls. In addition, it’s fun to see our island through new eyes and ears. You do not need to come for the whole day or make a huge commitment. If you want to go owling, be sure to call me so I can tell you where we are going to meet. If you’d like to join us for an hour or even a cup of coffee, we will meet at the flagpole at the landings building at 8:30 am Sunday Morning. Eventually we’ll get to our house for breakfast at nine-ish. Feel free to call me at any point during the day at 843-259-1713, and I’ll tell you how to join up with us.
