As the water temperature falls, the clarity improves.

The change of tides is a great time to watch the food chain in action at the pipes. Large red drum hang out, often in groups, feeding on the smaller fish that swim through the pipes with the tide. Schools of menhaden and ladyfish swim over and around the pipes.
On a safety note, any children with us are only allowed to view/fish/explore the pipes from the DOWNstream side– if someone were to fall in, we want them to be swept AWAY from the pipes. It’s not really a safe place for climbing. These photos were all taken from the seat of the golf cart. The force and magnitude of water flowing through is truly awesome to watch, and the beautiful fluidity of the fish positioning themselves amid the maelstrom is incredible.
