Feeding a crowd? Buy Shrimp at Shem Creek

IMG_4933Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant can be reached by water or road from the Isle of Palms.

To go by road, take Coleman Blvd either from the Ravenel Bridge or the Ben Sawyer Bridge from Sullivan’s.  The view to the left is taken from Coleman Blvd, so it’s hard to miss.  There are some great restaurants along Shem Creek, and many have great outdoor seating.  You can watch the dolphins chase the fishing and shrimp boats into the creek and the container ships make their way to parts unknown.

Sure, you can get shrimp in the impoundment, if you are patient and get the timing right.  But if you are feeding a crowd, buying shrimp before you get here can help us maintain a healthy ecosystem in the impoundment.  There are several places to buy shrimp (or fish, or crabs) right there; Mount Pleasant Seafood is on the Charleston side of the creek,IMG_3981 and directly opposite is Raul’s seafood.  Further up the creek (take Live Oak Drive, turn right on Magwood street, and follow it around) you will find Magwood’s seafood and Wando Shrimp.  IMG_3982

Don’t forget to bring a cooler; all of these folks are mighty friendly and will pack your shrimp in ice for you.IMG_4934
