Leukemia Cup Team Ties for First… mostly

On a gorgeous, unbelievably warm day, the Team Dewees Leukemia Cup Group borrowed a boat from Ocean Sailing Academy and joined the D fleet for the annual regatta.  The current was racing through the harbor and we were treated to VERY light winds.  Ned Goss, the owner of Ocean Sailing Academy and a member of Reggie’s Melges 24 Nationals team, was on board with: Gary McGraw, Reggie and Judy Fairchild, Emily, Kate, and Ted Fairchild, and Bob Drew.  We had a great start in our fleet, but the winds faded and the tide was pushing us hard, so we spent several hours playing “one step forward, two steps back” around the starting line and the moored container ship nearby.  Any progress we made through the water was negated by the persistent outgoing tide.  We laughed a lot.

Since the race reached the stated time limit without anyone in our class crossing the finish line, we all tied for first or last place, depending on how you look at it.

This year’s regatta raised over $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, with Team Dewees helping with that total.  Thank you, everyone who donated.  If you were not involved this year, and might like to sail with us next year or help with the team, please let us know at any time.  We’d love your help!

At the end of the regatta, we were treated to a dolphin show as the dolphins leaped and played, chasing a school of mullet and ladyfish right next to the dock at Patriot’s Point.  It was awesome!
