World’s Tallest Structures

The world's 19th tallest man-made structure?
The world's 19th tallest man-made structure?

I have to admit, this is a strange headline for a blog about Dewees Island. NOTHING on Dewees is more than 52 feet above sea level, except perhaps the WWII submarine tower. Here in the Lowcountry, not even the Ravenel Bridge, qualifies as the World’s Tallest anything. We love the sea. We’re close to the sea. We hope the sea doesn’t swallow us.

In this place devoid of height, Ken Tarleton’s brother Brent walks up to me at Six Pipes and says, “do you know how tall those towers are?” I have no idea. He’s pointing at the tall radio towers in Awendaw, SC, just north of Mount Pleasant. I say something lame like, “I thought all radio towers are 500 feet tall.”

Then through a long series of unlikely events, we hear that the tower is one of the tallest structures in world. Everyone laughs and says, “no way.” Not here.

Google and Wikipedia say, “wrongo!” It’s the WCSC-TV tower and it’s one of the World’s Tallest Structures. If I counted correctly, it’s currently number 19. It’s the TV tower for the Charleston CBS affiliate.
