This is the third in a series of post about “The Fish Kill of 2009”.
This morning, there were some dead fish around the edges of the impoundment. Flounder, for example, lined many of the banks. They were distressed and trying to get to a place with more oxygen. Schools of mullet and mud minnows were visible on the surface of the water. It looked like lots of bugs were on the surface of the water creating bubbles or reflections. But the bubbles were actually fish heads sticking out of the water trying to get oxygen.
Normally, alligators love eating distressed fish. They make easy prey. However, alligators only need to eat about once a week, and these seemed full, due to the abundance of food easily available. We watched a gator tail a thrashing red drum for about a minute only for the gator to decide he wasn’t hungry.
Here are some pictures of dead or dying fish from this morning.
