On Sunday, several sharp-eyed anglers on the ferry dock spied loggerhead turtle babies being swept repeatedly into the dock.  They had clearly hatched recently, but were swimming their hardest against the current in vain, and kept getting bumped into the dock.  If they get swept into the marsh behind Dewees, they will surely become lunch for a predator back there.

So Catherine Pace and Erica grabbed three of them (one account has Erica actually in the water) and placed them in a bucket.  We emptied the water out of the bucket, so they wouldn’t waste their energy swimming, and rushed them to Ancient Dunes Walkway, where the beach is far from the swiftly moving currents on the end of the island.

Since it was high tide, they didn’t have far to go, and after being swept back by a few waves, they ducked to the bottom of the wave, where they caught the return energy and swooshed out to sea.  They have a long way to swim before they get to the Sargasso Sea, where there is food and shelter.
