Terrapin Hatching draws a crowd

Have you ever been to Yellowstone and come upon a traffic jam?  RV’s along the side of the road, parked haphazardly while everyone gets out to see a bear or moose in its natural habitat?  That was the case on Dewees Inlet drive on Friday.

It is one of the things that makes the island so special– our common interest in the little miracles of life and our enjoyment in sharing that as a community.  Several families of three generations were on hand to watch the tiny terrapin emerge from the sand.  Many were on the way back from the ferry dock or headed to happy hour at the Huyler House when they came upon the nest hatching.  Nick and Erica, our interns, were on hand to make sure the babies were safe and keep them safe until Chrissie got back to collect data on them.  (Even the dog kept a very safe distance.) If you come past one of the marked nests and find evidence of hatching, be sure to call Chrissie at 568-3996.IMG_1676

Nice posting, Reggie! I was on island on Friday, but missed this event. Also, tell Bob that the Red Drum was a nice fish at six pipes on Sat!
