A number of people, including Judy Fairchild and Walter Mashman, have reported seeing 13 Roseatte Spoonbills over the last few days on Dewees. This morning Ester Doyle said she’d seen 14 in the impoundment in front of her house on lot 136! That’s a record according to everyone I’ve asked. The most I can remember on Dewees in the last 6 years is 6 or 8 spoonbills.
I popped out this morning around 9:45 a.m. and took the photos below of the spoonbills. I was looking south from Old House Lane between lot 128 and the Landings building out into the impoundment.

Great pictures! There have been spoonbill sightings as far north as Ohio this year.
Species’ ranges should continue to change with the upturn in global temperatures.
The Dewees spoonbills may be worth reporting to Jeff Mollenhauer, Director of Bird Conservation, at Audubon South Carolina. Jeff’s contact info is:

Enjoy and have a great summer!

I just called Jeff M. at Audabon. He said, “very cool.”. He’ll alert folks. He also said that Roseate Spoonbills have been reported in much higher #s and in more places this year than in the past. Johns Island, IOP and so on have all reported spoonbills.
