Red fox tracks on the beach

The past two days, we’ve found red fox tracks on the front beach.  Yesterday, we saw them around the loggerhead truck nest.  Fortunately, the fox didn’t dig up the nest.  This morning, I found them north of Osprey Walk next to the “cliff” of the eroded dunes.  I wondered if they might be the tracks of a small dog.  But there were no human foot steps and the tracks came down over the edge of the old dunes onto the softer dry sand.  Also the claw marks are quite small compared to dog tracks.  It looks like the fox might have been tracking a small deer.  I’m glad to see the fox tracks as Dewees needs a predator to keep mammal populations in check and I hadn’t heard anything about the fox in about two months.  Below are several pictures of the fox tracks.  If you have more news fox sightings, please let me know by posting a comment or sending me an email.

By the way, Dewees is lucky to have the red fox.  When our Naturalist told SC Department of Nature Resources about the red fox, DNR said red foxes don’t live on barrier islands.  It must be a grey fox.  DNR quickly reversed course when our Naturalist shared the pictures shown in this blog post from the winter.

I could have sworn I saw a red fox along Mathis Ferry Road about 2 weeks ago. Close to the Funeral Home. Don’t publish my name. But, I just posted to benefit others. I also saw what was probably coyote in the Molasses Creek Dev towards the back of the neighborhood, although the size was closer to a German Shepherd. One was large, the other was smaller. Only saw two but they were fast.
