Dewees Beach Erosion Continues

The walkway section and benches in the picture below have become a “beach dock” tossed about by the waves.  About a month ago, the “beach dock” was in the myrtles near the walkway leading to Jimmy Smith’s house.  Now it’s 500 yards north of Osprey Walk.

The movement of the beach dock north is a little surprising as most sand moves from the north to the south in this part of the South Atlantic.  During winter, however, the flow is sometimes reversed.  It is hard to imagine how such a huge and heavy walkway section can move time and again and then buried in the sand 2000 feet away.

If you haven’t seen the Google Earth maps that Chrissie L. created with Gary McGraw’s data, you should have a look.  The change in the beach’s profile in just 2 years is dramatic — in many places Dewees has lost more than 200 feet of beach.
